Macau is a dynamic city about 30 square kilometres in size, located on the southeastern coast of China. Once a sleepy fishing village under Portuguese colonial rule for more than 400 years, it has since become a popular entertainment and tourist destination that welcomes in excess of 30 million visitors annually pre-COVID. As the only Chinese jurisdiction in which gambling is legal, Macau overtook Las Vegas in 2006 to become the world’s biggest gaming market by revenue. The city has entered into a fresh phase of growth anchored by strong demographics, rising local incomes, major infrastructure projects and the government’s commitment to diversify the economy towards a broad-based mix of commercial activities, attracting a more sophisticated visitor profile.
